Study Objectives BESS sites are prone to thermal issues because of their dense packing and the amount of thermal energy they dissipate over a short period of time. Simulation can be key to understanding if a site design is susceptible to thermal issues and, if present, what remediation techniques would effectively minimize any risk of batteries exceeding warranty or operating temperatures. Prior to this study, the BESS Unit provider had documented that their units should operate well in a no wind condition for a site located in the sunny desert of Electric City. However, site owner (ABC Corp.) was concerned about alternate environmental conditions for the units to operate effectively. Rand SIM was contracted to evaluate site performance under these alternate conditions, and with the presence of inverters, to identify any deficiencies, root-causes and modifications required to address and ensure sufficient thermal management and grid stability.
