Ansys Rocky Particle Simulation
Coupling Rocky and Ansys – A Game Changer
Because Rocky is fully integrated with Ansys Workbench, engineers
can combine particle simulation together with other physics, such as
structural and fluids. Here are overviews of how Rocky can be used
with two of the programs within Ansys Workbench:
• Ansys Mechanical - When Rocky is coupled with Ansys
Mechanical, engineers can evaluate the tension stresses
and forces generated by the granular matter as it
interacts with the materials handling equipment, such as
transfer chutes and conveyor belts. The loads estimated
by Rocky analyses are passed to Ansys Mechanical to
predict the structural response.
• Ansys Fluent - Rocky-Fluent coupling enables engineers
in many different industries to analyze a large range
of processes, including complex phenomena such as
pneumatic conveying, slurry flow inside grinding mills,
and particle drying.
Examples
Here are examples of how two companies in different industries used Rocky software to speed up prototype
development, develop better products, and get them to market faster.
Company Name
Roesner
Industry
Agriculture
Challenge
A key concern with fertilizer spreaders is that a lack of uniformity of distribution patterns
can lead to uneven crop growth.
Solution
Engineers used Rocky to quickly understand complex variables, such as fertilizer particle size,
and they performed virtual prototyping of loading chutes, spinner discs, and vane designs.
Results
They accurately modeled the interactions between the small fertilizer particles and the
rotating spinner disc and determined that a 5% change in the disc angle would achieve
the optimum spread pattern.
